Overview

Parent visas range from the low-cost, long-queue 103 to contributory streams (143/173, 864/884) with substantial charges but far shorter waits, and the temporary Sponsored Parent 870 (3–5 year stays). The Balance of Family test applies to permanent streams.

Eligibility requirements

  • Child is a settled Australian citizen, PR or eligible NZ citizen sponsor
  • Balance of Family test (permanent streams): at least half of children eligible in Australia
  • Assurance of Support (contributory streams)
  • Sponsor income requirement (870)
  • Meet health and character requirements

Frequently asked questions

103, 143 or 870 — how do we choose?

It comes down to time versus money. The 143 contributory stream costs roughly ten times more than the 103 but skips a 20+ year queue; the 870 is temporary but fast and does not require the Balance of Family test. Many families combine strategies — we map the options before you commit.
