Overview

Citizenship by conferral is available to permanent residents who meet the residence requirement (4 years in Australia, including 12 months as PR), and by descent to children born overseas to an Australian citizen parent. We also handle complex residence-history and character cases.

Eligibility requirements

  • Permanent resident (or eligible NZ citizen) meeting the 4-year residence rule
  • No more than 12 months overseas in 4 years, 90 days in the final year
  • Intend to live in, or maintain a close association with, Australia
  • Good character (18+)
  • Pass the citizenship test (18–59 years)

Document checklist

  • Passports and travel history
  • PR grant evidence
  • Address history for 4 years
  • Police clearances where requested
  • Birth certificates (descent applications)

Frequently asked questions

Can travel break my citizenship residence eligibility?

Yes — the two caps (12 months in 4 years, 90 days in the last year) catch many applicants out. Discretion exists for some circumstances; we calculate your exact eligible date before you apply.
